Jeremiah Ridge began as a set of house plans that we came upon independently and agreed on immediately. The discovery of a beautiful piece of land in a special place came next. We purchased our 30-acre parcel in Alabama in 2007 and began to have  a vision for taking care of this property in a responsible manner. It matured into a residential project – carefully-planned, responsibly-built and lovingly shared with our family and friends. We believe it has become much more than that. Here’s what our vision of this project has matured into.

We are now refining our initial research and evaluating every aspect of the project - site preparation, construction modalities, material and systems comparisons, wall construction and finishes, floors, trim – is being analyzed and researched anew. We’re also looking at every aspect of the project for its job-training quotient.  We’re asking “what knowledge and skill can be shared and transferred to someone in this community to help them live better in the 21st Century” – to further their family’s chance at a part of the American Dream.

If you follow this project to completion, you’re going to discover that we’re different from many folks who call themselves “green.”  We are not convinced that the earth has a fever nor do we believe that should be the driving force behind change. That “crisis mentality” prevents a rational approach to solutions.  We prefer to undertake change because its simply good stewardship.  We can begin a transition from a high-carbon technology to more sustainable, renewable systems by utilizing existing, but cleaner and more efficient sources. Green technology for the most part is rather expensive and is hardly affordable to many households.  We want to continue to seek information and share it with others so that we can all work to find better affordable solutions to becoming green. We want to leave a better place with more options for our children and their children. But we refuse to do this using “smoke and carbon credits”. We view that practice as simply a means to avoid doing what you can because you can afford to purchase someone else’s sacrifice.

We currently live in Luray, Virginia in Shenandoah Valley's Blue Ridge Mountains. We have three grown children, four beautiful granddaughters and one terrific grandson. We homeschooled our youngest son and he has worked with us for many years in our conferences as our av tech and webmaster. He  has designed the Jeremiah Ridge website and all the graphics on the site. Our daughter is a teacher in North Carolina and also has worked with us in our homeschool conference for several years as our Exhibitor Liaison and "computer/internet trouble-shooter". Our oldest son works for Barbizon and has been a great resource and consultant - particularly in the areas of lighting and green living. We have managed many events for others and previously produced the Blue Ridge Homeschool Conference in Winchester, Virginia. We own and have produced the Northern Virginia Home Education Conference for the last seven years.
